Mozilla Tunderbird (Lightning) to Google Calendar obstacle

Postby hostingforum » Tue Jan 22, 2013 3:13 pm

Hi, you may face similar issue. You used Thunderbird with plugin Lightning to manage your calendar and events, reminders.
Now you decided to try to export your callendar CSV or ICS (or any other) file to Google Calendar. You did it and you realised it went OK. It is amazing. But wait a moment! The events has only pop up reminder when you are loged into google account. You certainly want also email or SMS reminder! :mt

You have too much events to edit. Here is the guide how to modiffy Thunderbidr (lightning) calendar files so the email notiffication is enabled on all imported calendar events.

---------

This process worked for me I exported my current Google callendars from Google calendar admin (arrow next to Other callendars/Settings/Export). then extracted ZIP file i downloaded from google. Backed up whole folder. Then in PSPAD html editor (or any other good editor, maybe Notepad sufficing) opened .ics calendar data file and searched for "ACTION:EMAIL" and removed the existing block of email reminder setting. Example:

BEGIN:VALARM
ACTION:EMAIL
DESCRIPTION:This is an event reminder
SUMMARY:Alarm notification
ATTENDEE:mailto:myemail@gmail.com
TRIGGER:-P0DT0H20M0S
END:VALARM

So just block for popup notiffication remains:

BEGIN:VALARM
ACTION:DISPLAY
DESCRIPTION:This is an event reminder
TRIGGER:-P0DT0H10M0S
END:VALARM

Then i used find and replace tool http://textmechanic.com/Find-and-Replace-Text.html pasted the ics file content there and search for "END:VALARM" and replace by:

END:VALARM
BEGIN:VALARM
ACTION:EMAIL
DESCRIPTION:This is an event reminder
SUMMARY:Alarm notification
ATTENDEE:mailto:youremailhere@gmail.com
TRIGGER:-P0DT0H30M0S
END:VALARM

this search & replace will result that you add email notiffication to every event

(change in TRIGGER value 30M to any number of minutes when notiffication willl be sent) Then copy new replaced text to the .ICS callendar file. Then create new TEST calendar in google, then import this file to it and check whether there is email notiffication set in every event you just imported. If ok. YOu may delete your original calendar (export its data for backup first) and importing modiffied ICS file you got using this method.

Alot of work, hope it helped. (took me 5 hours to figure out!)

Regarding SMS notiffication, im not sure if google accept it into ICS file, i dont think so, because when you export your callendar its not there.. :coffee
