Yes, it is possible to do it, if you are server administrator, you can even do everything via command line (Linux shell).
But there are also free options with visual interface. Like Webmin, Kloxxo and more. Search free cpanel alternatives at google

Webmin? Plesk? DirectAdmin? Lots... but cPanel is industry standard.

There are many control panels available other that cPanel for managing a website like plesk (mostly used for windows based hosting), webmin, zpanel, kloxo but still my vote goes to cPanel. It is the best and most widely used control panel.

Working without cPanel is something similar to operating through DOS and not through windows. It totally depends over one's expertise over command prompt. But still I firmly beleive that there are not major disadvantages of using cPanel then why to avoid it?

Yes, there are many free and paid alternatives to cpanel, such as CWP, Vesta CP, Direct admin, ServerPilot. If you are a tech-savvy person, you can manage your server and website without a control panel.

I’ve used CentOS web Panel. It is great alternative to cPanel and also it is free.
They offer huge option including SSH console to manage VPS and dedicated server. You can migrate your cPanel account to CentOS web panel account within few clicks.
