RTF means Rich Text Format, a format that can be read by all text editing softwares, All subsequent releases of Microsoft Word for the Macintosh and all versions of Microsoft Word for Windows have included built-in RTF readers and writers which translate from RTF to Word's .doc format and from .doc to RTF.

Rich text format is more interesting than plain format, where it accepts all the formatting options for the text.

Usually it stands for Rich Text Format, a non-proprietary word processing standard that does better formatting than can be accomplished with straight text, but not as good as with proprietary formats.
