How to setup dedicated server to resell VPSs

Postby hostingforum » Fri Mar 01, 2013 9:58 am

Hi, so i was interested what is the best and free/cheap way to create and resell VPSs on dedicated server? Do you have any ideas on this topic?

----------
My discoveries:

OpenVZ.. comes only with command line. There are third party control panels for it. OVZ Web Panel, HyperVM and Proxmox looks good. vePortal is paid option ($10 monthly)

XEN vs OpenVZ
OpenVZ allows burstable memory (allows overselling), XEN has swap instead (is more like dedi server,no overselling, VPSs more isolated). There is good comparison.

Hello,

About control panel, SolusVM is the leader and virtualizor comes after. These software are both paid. Proxmox is free and seems to be good (tried ~6 months).

Using SolusVM allow to merge in one interface management of multiple physical dedicated server. It supports OpenVZ, KVM and Xen.

OpenVZ is container virtualization. It requires Linux as host and Linux as guest. Multiple provider uses OpenVZ and do overselling as most of customers doesn't use 100% resources all the time.

KVM and Xen are paravirtualization. It is more hard (but not impossible) to oversell with these technologies. The main advantage is these virtualization environment allow using any OS as guest, as the kernel is not shared between guest and host.

There is also Hyper-V virtualization for Windows but cheap solution means 99.9% time open-source solution.
