When you are going to buy a new domain name you will need to choose among many extensions like .com .net .org .info and many more. Have you ever though why there are so many and what is the use of each one?
The extension of your domain name can attract more visitors, and make it look different or more professional. Those are small things, but they can do the difference.

.com (Commercial): It was created for commercial use.

.net (Network): It's purpose was to host sites of network companies, like phone/ internet/ television providers.

.ogr (Organization): This extensions was about to used by non-profitable organizations.

.biz (Business): It was created to give the idea of a business site when the .com was no longer a commercial extension.

I know there are much more, and many webmasters are not using the one which fits to their services. Although if you choose the right on you will see that your site will be looking more organized.

What you are saying is true although the dot com domain gained more popularity than other extensions by a very wide gap, but soon local extensions will become popular than the dot com.

Today, most businesses and even people who are interested in launching personal websites prefer to choose the .com domain extension because it has a commercial tone when going live over the net. Of course from SEO aspects, there are no big differences between domain extensions.

Through optimizing and promoting websites and doing proper SEO, all domains, even the ones that do not have any of the terms specified inside the wording will have chances to succeed in the niches. The top choice for shopping sites and online businesses is still the .com option though.

'.com' should be the first preference if the website is commercial and representing worldwide business activities. Other wise going with .co. + geographical location wise extension is also not a bad idea like .co.in for company keeping its operations mostly within Indian territory and occasionally out of India.
